To connect an ethernet cable to your PC, simply plug one end of the cable into your computer's ethernet port (usually located on the back or side) and the other end into your router, modem, or network switch. The connection should click into place, and your PC will automatically detect the wired network connection within seconds.
Most desktop PCs have the ethernet port on the back panel near other connectivity options. Laptops typically have the port on the side. The port is rectangular and slightly wider than a phone jack, designed specifically for RJ45 connectors.
Ensure your ethernet cable is long enough to reach from your PC to your router or network device. Check both ends of the cable for any damage to the plastic clips or connectors.
Insert the RJ45 connector firmly into your PC's ethernet port until you hear a click. The plastic clip should engage to secure the connection. Repeat this process at the other end, connecting to your router or modem.
Look for LED indicators on your ethernet port - typically green or orange lights that confirm an active connection. Your PC should automatically detect the network and establish an internet connection.
Never force an ethernet cable into the port. If it doesn't slide in easily, check the orientation - the clip should face downward on most PCs.
Using damaged or low-quality cables can result in poor connection speeds or intermittent connectivity issues. Always inspect cables before use.
Don't confuse the ethernet port with similar-looking ports like phone jacks. Ethernet ports are wider and designed specifically for RJ45 connectors.

Many modern laptops omit ethernet ports to save space. You can use a USB-to-ethernet adapter to add wired connectivity to any PC with a USB port.
Check that both ends are securely connected, verify your network settings, and ensure your router is functioning properly. Try a different cable if problems persist.
While most ethernet cables will work, using Cat6 or higher ensures better performance and future-proofing for faster internet speeds.
