Not all Ethernet cable is created equal, and the brand printed on the box tells you a lot more than you might think. Conductor material, fire safety rating, shielding and manufacturer warranty all vary significantly between brands — and choosing the wrong one can mean a network that fails to perform, breaches building regulations, or simply doesn't last. This guide compares the main Ethernet cable brands stocked by Kenable — Excel, XeLAN, SFX, Kenable's own-brand range, and Mercury — so you can pick the right cable for your project, whether it's a domestic install, a commercial fit-out, or a budget home office upgrade.
Excel is one of the UK's most trusted structured cabling brands among professional installers, largely thanks to its 25-year system warranty available when cable, patch panels and outlets are all Excel components fitted by an Excel-approved installer. It's the go-to choice for commercial and public-sector projects where certification and long-term support matter.
Solid bare copper Cat6a bulk reel with a Dca Euroclass fire rating and LSOH jacket. Our best-selling installation cable, ideal for structured cabling projects where certified performance is essential. Also available in other lengths.

A factory-terminated Excel patch lead with blade boot design for snag-free removal from dense patch panels. LSOH jacket matches the fire safety profile of Excel's bulk cable, so it's the natural choice to finish an Excel-based install. Available in other lengths.
View ProductXeLAN's Cat6A cable carries a B2ca Euroclass rating — the highest CPR fire class commonly available in copper network cable. This makes it the preferred brand for schools, hospitals, high-rise developments and other public or commercial buildings where fire regulations demand the very lowest flame spread and smoke toxicity.
Solid bare copper Cat6a with B2ca fire rating and LSOH jacket — our second best-selling bulk cable. A cost-effective step up in fire performance versus Dca-rated cable, without moving to a shielded design.
View ProductSFX offers a shielded (F/FTP) Cat6a alternative at a lower price point than Excel or XeLAN, while still using an LSZH jacket and Eca fire rating. It's a sensible choice where screening from electromagnetic interference is needed but budget is tighter, such as commercial fit-outs near power containment or industrial equipment.
Solid copper Cat6a with foil-screened (F/FTP) construction, LSZH jacket and Eca fire rating, supplied on a compact 100m reel — a good sized quantity for smaller commercial jobs or home networking projects that need shielding.
View ProductKenable's own-brand range focuses on genuine solid bare copper at competitive prices, without the certification overhead of the installer brands above. Our Cat6a S/FTP reel is our top-selling bulk network cable, and the slim full-copper Cat6 patch lead is a popular budget-friendly finishing cable for desks and racks.

Our best-selling Ethernet cable overall, with 53 sales to date. Solid bare copper Cat6a, fully braid-and-foil shielded (S/FTP), LSZH jacket, supporting 10 Gigabit speeds over the full 100m channel. Excellent all-rounder for home and small business installs.

A genuine solid copper Cat6 patch lead in a slimline design that's easier to route behind desks and in tight rack spaces than a standard round patch cable. Available in a wide range of other lengths.
View ProductMercury's Cat6-CCA reel is the most affordable bulk cable in our range, but it's important to understand what CCA (copper-clad aluminium) means in practice. CCA conductors have significantly higher electrical resistance than solid copper, which increases signal attenuation over distance and reduces the amount of power that can be safely delivered for PoE devices such as cameras and access points. CCA cable also does not meet TIA/ISO conductor standards for structured cabling, so it should be limited to short, low-power runs where budget is the primary concern — not for PoE, long backbone runs, or certified installations.
Mercury's budget Cat6-CCA reel supports Gigabit speeds over short indoor runs at the lowest price point in our range. Fine for basic home networking without PoE, but not a substitute for full copper cable on standards-compliant or PoE installations.

| XeLAN | Cat6A U/FTP 305m Reel | Bulk install cable | Solid bare copper | B2ca / LSOH | Public/commercial buildings needing top fire class | £195.96 |
| SFX | Cat6a F/FTP 100m Reel | Bulk install cable | Solid bare copper | Eca / LSZH | Shielded value option, smaller jobs | £97.20 |
| Kenable | Cat6A S/FTP 305m Reel | Bulk install cable | Solid bare copper | LSZH | Best value full copper, 10G home/office | £243.86 |

There's no single "best" brand — it depends on your project. Excel is the top choice for certified commercial installs with warranty backing, XeLAN suits public buildings needing the highest fire safety class (B2ca), SFX offers a shielded option at a lower price, and Kenable's own-brand range gives the best value full copper cable for home and small business use.
CCA cable, such as our Mercury Cat6-CCA reel, works fine for short, low-power indoor runs but is not standards-compliant and isn't suitable for Power over Ethernet devices or cable runs approaching 100m, due to higher electrical resistance than solid copper.
LSOH/LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) jackets are recommended for most commercial, public and multi-occupancy buildings, as they release less toxic smoke in a fire compared with standard PVC-jacketed cable. Check your local building regulations and CPR requirements before installing.
U/FTP has unshielded pairs, F/FTP adds an overall foil screen, and S/FTP adds both individually foiled pairs and an overall braid screen for maximum interference protection. Shielded cable requires correctly earthed shielded connectors and patch panels to be effective.
